KESUMA was initially formed by a group of students at the Universiti Malaya in 1971 to promote traditional Malay dances on campus. KESUMA embodied repertoires of the National Cultural Complex (Kompleks Budaya Negara/KBN) in the 1970s to the extent that every aspect of the performance such as choreography, music, costumes, and accessories replicated the national dance troupe. KESUMA soon became popular both nationally and internationally. With the inception of the dance department at the Cultural Centre in UM in 2005, KESUMA was adopted as the traditional dance ensemble of the Universiti Malaya under the Dance Department. It was mentored by Prof. Dr. Mohd Anis Md Nor until 2015, with assistance from MAWARKU in reconstruction of the KBN repertoire. Instructors and performers of KESUMA are comprised of lecturers, alumni, and students of the dance department.
